Street Lighting

The Town of Indian Trail provides street lights as one of the services by the Town. The Town provides for installation of a wooden pole and light with overhead lines along with the maintenance and power for the light. Any additional upgrades will be paid by others.

Electric Companies


The Town of Indian Trail is serviced by two electric companies; Duke Energy and Union Electric Cooperative. All light poles are to be set in an area deemed appropriate by the service provider and North Carolina Department of Transportation requirements which must be followed. Any Street Light Outage should be reported to your service provider (either Duke or Union).

Requirements


  • All street lights shall be 150 watt, 16,000 lumen high pressure sodium Flat-lens Cobra Cutoff streetlights placed on wood poles, unless the developer chooses to install decorative lighting.
  • Continuous street lighting shall be installed on both sides of streets using an average spacing of 200 feet and staggering the lights. However, the spacing may deviate from the average if power poles exist.

  • The developer is responsible for paying all upfront fees including any amortization costs, for decorative lights and poles to the Town prior to the Town issuing the final acceptance of the development project.
  • Except in unusual circumstances, the Town will not install lights on property where the owner does not agree to the installation.
  • In areas being developed that are adjacent to existing streets the developer is to install street lighting on street frontages concurrently with other off-site improvements.
  • In existing developed areas standard wood pole streetlights will be installed by the Town upon receipt of a petition signed by 75% of property owners on any given street.
  • In existing subdivisions all streetlights shall be 100 watt, 9,500 lumen high pressure sodium Flat-lens Cobra Cutoff street lights.
  • In new subdivisions all street lights shall be decorative street lighting mounted on a 12 foot black fiberglass pole and shall conform to all land use ordinances.
  • Street lighting layouts are to be approved by the Town of Indian Trail.
  • The Town of Indian Trail will assume responsibility for the monthly operating and maintenance costs for all approved lights.
  • All streetlights are to be installed and maintained by the service provider.
  • The Town will not participate in lights that are located on permanent private streets, permanent private roads within a minor subdivision, driveways, apartment communities, gated communities and common areas.
