Indian Trail residents will take the fight against breast cancer to the streets this weekend as part of the Firefighters for the Cure 5K.
The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 13, starting at Indian Trail’s Chestnut Square Park. All participants, for a $30 registration fee, will be able to take part in the event and receive a Firefighters for the Cure 5K t-shirt – with all proceeds supporting breast cancer awareness efforts and mammograms for uninsured women. There are still spaces available to register for the event, and registration will be open the morning of the 5K starting at 7:30 a.m. at the park.
The Firefighters for the Cure nonprofit, which is partnering with Indian Trail for the 5K, will provide 40 free mammograms and follow-up support as part of the event. To register for the 5K, make a donation or for more information, visit www.firefightersforthecure.org.
“We are very excited to be able to work together with this great nonprofit in our community to help those impacted by breast cancer,” Indian Trail Special Events Coordinator Hayden Kramer said. “Many of our staff members have become very close to members of our community through the events we hold throughout the year – being able to do something to give back to them and support them in their time of need is incredibly humbling for us.”
“One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives,” added Firefighters for the Cure organizer Windi Henderson, of the Hemby Bridge Fire Department. “Firefighters for the Cure wants to make sure all women have an opportunity to receive a mammogram, no matter their insurance or economic situation. With the community’s support on events like this, we know we can all come together to make a great difference for Union County.”
The 5K will begin at Chestnut Square Park at 9 a.m., heading down Matthews-Indian Trail Road toward Stallings before turning onto Flowe Drive, then onto Smith Farm Road and back to Matthews-Indian Trail Road to end at the park. Matthews-Indian Trail Road, Flowe Drive and Smith Farm Road will be closed from 9 to 10:30 a.m. as part of the event.
Chestnut Square Park is located at 320 Chestnut Parkway. Find more information about parks and events in Indian Trail at www.itsparksandrec.com.
