Community Planning

The Town of Indian Trail Planning Department seeks to develop a vibrant and self-sufficient town by promoting a community planning philosophy. This approach entails a focus on citizen outreach and involvement for both the residential and business community within the Town limits. The following information details some of the operations the Planning Department in regards the community planning philosophy.

Community Planning Program

The Planning Department has developed a community planning program. This approach entails dividing the Town into four “planning areas” in which one planner is assigned as the contact for each area. This staff member is responsible for all planning duties within his or her area including community outreach, plan reviews and general planning and zoning questions from the public. The intent is for the individual planner to be very familiar with their “planning area”. The planner over time becomes knowledgeable with developments, stakeholders, the citizens and their neighborhoods and will be more likely to identify and address reoccurring problems.

Citizen Participation

We are committed to encouraging citizen participation, education, customer service and partnerships with all community stakeholders. Residents of the Town have many opportunities to become involved whether it be through joining a one of the boards or committees or by even volunteering for a day to help out with one of the many town events. If you are interested in finding out more information on participation and volunteer opportunities please contact the Planning Department.

Community Outreach

The Planning Department regularly speaks at various community meetings to discuss the services and operations of the Town as well as answer planning and zoning questions. These meetings include Home Owners Association meetings, and other business and civic group gathering. If you are interested in having a staff member speak at your community meeting, please contact Shelley DeHart, the Planning Director for the Town at (704) 821-5401 or at srd@indiantrail.org.

The Town Staff strives to encourage residents to become involved in the many volunteer options available not only through the Town but in local charities and community groups as well. Citizen involvement in every aspect is crucial to the success of our community.  Employees of the Town in addition to their work responsibilities participate in charities and volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Habitat for Humanity of Union County is one of the volunteer events that the staff participates in. In fall of 2008 the planning staff spent a Saturday on a construction site helping build a house for a family in need (see picture to right). The Planning Department continues to work with Habitat for Humanity and other charities to in an effort to give back to the community.

Subdivision Statistics

The Planning Department maintains a spreadsheet of information for all residential subdivisions within the Town. This data is kept current through monthly updates from the Planning Staff. Some of the information identified in the spreadsheet includes zoning designations for each subdivision, lots under construction and percent complete.

The subdivision map is linked to the subdivision statistics spreadsheet above. This map is updated monthly so that it reflects the data collected from the subdivision statistics spreadsheet. The map is a great tool to monitor development trends and growth hotspots.

Neighborhood Assessment

In an effort to identify opportunities in our community, the Indian Trail planning staff is working on a Neighborhood Assessment Program.  The program consists of several criteria used to objectively compare neighborhoods throughout town.  The assessment will identify areas of need and attempt to coordinate cleanup efforts, repair sidewalks, enforce zoning violations, and improve overall curb appeal.
