How do I get garbage picked up at my residence?
The Town of Indian Trail contracts with a private garbage service company to provide service for town residents. The garbage pick up service is VOLUNTARY. Residents requesting service should call Town Hall at 704-821-8114 to set up an account.

How does it work?
The Town provides one rollout garbage container for once a week pick up. Rollout carts must be at roadside by 7am the day of your scheduled pickup. We strongly suggest putting the cart out the night before.

How much do garbage services cost?
There is no monthly charge for garbage service beginning January 1, 2007. The cost is now included in your property tax. However, we do require payment for any charges prior to December 31, 2006.

What kind of trash is picked up?
The town picks up typical household garbage.

What items cannot be picked up?
Bulk items such as tires, furniture, appliances, carpet, construction debris, yard waste, hazardous waste, or Christmas trees cannot be picked up.

Does Indian Trail offer garbage service to businesses or industrial facilities?
No, only residential service is provided.

Is garbage service provided on holidays?
Christmas day and New Year's day are the only holidays of the year that garbage service is not provided. There is regular garbage service pick up on Thanksgiving Day. On a rare occasion, inclement weather will cause cancellation of pick up. Link to Action Garbage

What about recycling?
Along with the garbage cart, the town provides a bin for recycling. This is also voluntary. There is no charge for recycling, and it is collected on the same scheduled day as household garbage.

What items can be recycled?
Metal cans including soft drink and food cans, glass bottles and jars with brown, clear or green glass, newspapers and #1 and #2 plastic containers including soft drink, detergent and milk jug containers can be recycled.

What items can not be recycled?
- Cereal boxes, cracker boxes or coated cardboard
- Clothing hangers, toys, tires, motor oil, cardboard boxes, and old windows
- Buckets
- Flower pots (plastic or clay)
- Oil containers or antifreeze containers
- Plastic grocery bags
- Wrapping paper
- Hardback books
- Mirrors, ceramic cups or plates, crystal, light bulbs
- Window glass, canning jars or drinking glasses
- Fence wiring, metal bands, gas cans, propane bottles
- TV's or microwaves

How can I dispose of garbage myself?
Union County offers a disposal and recycling center on Wesley Chapel Stouts Road behind the Sun Valley High School. This site is open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 7am until 7pm. There is no phone service at this location. Union County charges $.25 per household bag of garbage.
The Union County Landfill is located on the east side of Monroe at 2125 Austin Chaney Road in Wingate, NC. The telephone number is 704-233-5334. This site is open Monday through Friday from 7am until 4pm and Saturday from 8am until noon. Large items such as appliances, metal, and tires (rims off) can be taken to the Austin Chaney site. There is no charge for these items.
Yard waste can be disposed at the Austin Chaney site. The charge is $1.50 per 100 pounds.

Where can I dispose of oil, paint and other hazardous material?
Disposal of household hazardous waste is available to Union County residents at no charge at these locations:

Foxhole Recycling Center and Yard Waste
17131 Lancaster Highway
These centers WILL NOT accept ammunition, pressurized gas cylinders greater than 20 pounds, gun powder, explosives, smoke detectors, radioactive materials and bio-infectious material. Please contact Union County Public Works at 704-296-4210 for more information.
