Towns Will Explore Combining Economic Development Efforts
The Towns of Indian Trail, Matthews, Mint Hill and Stallings are exploring the idea of combining their resources in order to be more successful in retaining and recruiting businesses and jobs to the area. The Town Boards and Town Managers met last week to hear a presentation on how the North Mecklenburg Towns of Davidson, Cornelius and Huntersville have combined their economic development efforts.
“The Towns have several qualities that would allow us to have a natural partnership with each other so that we can achieve our economic development goals,” said Matthews Manager Hazen Blodgett. “We can no longer compete with each other. We need to understand that we must work together as a region in order to recruit jobs and maintain the quality of life our citizens’ desire”, further commented Indian Trail Town Manager Joe Fivas.
The Towns have similar demographics, are in close proximity to each other, and each already has some element of an economic development plan in place. “Each of us has limited resources, for example, money and staff, especially in this economy. Together, we can combine these resources to more effectively market ourselves in order to retain and recruit jobs to each of our Towns,” said Brian Matthews, Manager of Stallings.
“We know that we need to keep our tax base diversified and with this type of partnership we could concentrate on bringing the type of businesses that will drive jobs, retail growth and residents to our Towns. It is a positive domino effect, commented Brian Welch, Town Manager of Mint Hill.
The Towns agreed to take the next step in the process which would be to appoint members to an exploratory committee to further evaluate how the joint economic development partnership might be developed.
