[ARCHIVED] Public Input Opens on Union County Comprehensive Plan Vision

The following information comes from the Union County government offices.

Union County will open a four-week public input period on Monday, March 2, 2020, to guide the development of the comprehensive plan for unincorporated areas of the County. The plan, called Union County 2050, will provide guidance to Commissioners and staff on how to address growth, public health, safety, environment, infrastructure, and economic development through 2050. The first phase in the year-long process will establish a vision for the plan.

Residents are encouraged to provide input on a vision for Union County 2050 online or at one of three in-person public input sessions. The sessions provide an opportunity for residents to learn about the process and provide feedback on four draft visions. The format and information provided will be the same at the three scheduled sessions listed below.

March 9, 2020, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Mineral Springs Volunteer Fire Department, 5804 Waxhaw Highway, Mineral Springs, NC 28108

March 10, 2020, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Indian Trail Town Hall, 315 Matthews-Indian Trail Road, Indian Trail, NC 28079

March 11, 2020, from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Union County Agricultural Center, 3230-D Presson Road, Monroe, NC 28112

The County is receiving public input through March 29, 2020. Residents can learn more about the process at www.unioncountync.gov/uc2050.

Planning staff estimate it will take approximately 12 months to develop the comprehensive plan. The Board of Commissioners will be periodically updated on the process and asked to provide feedback. Staff expects to present the final plan and recommendations to the Board in early 2021.

Union County’s population has grown by nearly 35,000 people since the 2010 Census, to an approximate population of 235,908. Regional growth trends show Union County is the second-fastest growing county in the Charlotte metropolitan area; with Mecklenburg County leading growth in the area. Trends show growth will continue in Union County. Factors driving families to relocate to Union County include proximity to Charlotte, a great school system, low taxes, and affordability.
